PROGRAM
“Green” is a weekend seminar at the Islamic Study Center, just
off the corner of 10th & Main streets in Charlottesville. There are six
notable speakers, and audience participation is expected and encouraged.
The center will be open from 9:15 am with a light breakfast, and the lectures
will begin at 10 am both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s program will
continue through dinner and Maghrib prayer (c. 7:45), Sunday’s will
end at 5pm.
There will be breaks for lunch (served), tea and dinner (served), and prayer
in its times. (Everyone is welcome, just please observe modest dress
and prepare to sit on the floor. We do have some folding chairs).
The program is free; everything is covered by donations, which are welcome.

Shaykh Ahmed Abdur-Rashid
…is a lecturer, writer and consultant in education, dialogue, NGO development,
and conflict resolution, and an authorized teacher of five orders of Sufism.
In 1979, he founded Legacy International, which has been instrumental in creating
domestic and international programs in leadership training, environmental awareness,
inter-community dialogue and tolerance.

Mohamad A. Chakaki
…has a MA in Urban Ecology and Environmental Design from Yale University,
and undergraduate degrees in Religion and Biology from George Washington University.
He has worked in parks and gardens across the US, with the Peace Corps in Central
Africa, and the United Nations in Syria. He now consults on environment and
community development projects in both the US and the Middle East.

Musa Waldbaum
…is a principal with Technology Development, Inc, helping to develop
innovative businesses in fields as diverse as desalination, geothermal technology,
biofeuls, and healthcare delivery, situated in many parts of the world including
the US, SE Asia, the Gulf, and Eastern Europe. He is a highly skilled executive
with expertise in financing, conflict management, and cross-cultural relations.

Dr. Masood Ahmad
…is an energy expert with a PhD in engineering and the director of
planning at a federally regulated power facility. His particular concentration
is to project the states'
need for electricity twenty years into the future, and to understand the available
resources for meeting those needs.

and economists predict, what studies show)

D. Inayat von Briesen
…is a faculty member in the Futures Institute at Central Piedmont Community
College. He has been in charge of connecting the seven campuses of the college
together by information technology to streamline teaching activities, and is
currently working on projects in the 3-D virtual world and the Center for Sustainability.
He is a frequent khatib at masajid and a popular lecturer on information technology
and distance learning topics.
TOPIC: The Big Jihad: Changing Ourselves to Change Our Environment.

Shaykh Nooruddeen Durkee
…is an author. translator and teacher, and director of the Islamic Study
Center. He also or many years has worked on appropriate technology and traditional
architecture, including Dar al Islam in Abiquiu, New Mexico as well as several
other communities. His message will be that the solutions to current and future
problems rest upon the return to frugality (faqr) and the necessity of scrupulousness
(wara') in daily life.
